If your last cart ran lead acid batteries, the difference is bigger than the spec sheet suggests, and it is mostly about what you no longer have to do.

Lead acid packs need topping up with distilled water on a schedule. Miss it in Florida heat and you shorten their life considerably. Lithium also holds voltage more consistently as it discharges, so the cart does not noticeably slow down toward the end of a charge the way an older cart does on the way back up a hill. The pack is lighter, which helps range and handling, and it generally lasts substantially longer in cycles.

The honest trade-off is upfront cost. A lithium cart costs more on the day you buy it. Over the life of the cart, once you count replacement lead acid packs and the maintenance in between, most owners come out ahead. One practical note. Plug the cart in and leave it plugged in when it is not being used. Storing a battery pack of any chemistry at a low charge through a Florida summer is the fastest way to damage it.

Street Legal Carts and Florida Rules

This is the part to understand before you buy, not after. In Florida there is a legal difference between a golf cart and a low speed vehicle, and it determines where you can drive and what paperwork you need.

A golf cart is limited in speed and is generally restricted to designated roads and communities. A low speed vehicle is faster, and it has to be built and equipped to a higher standard, which typically means items such as headlights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, a windshield, seat belts and a VIN. An LSV also has to be titled, registered and insured, and the driver needs a valid licence.

Florida has updated its rules on golf cart operation in recent years, including requirements around the age and licensing of operators on public roads, and local governments can add restrictions of their own. Because these rules change and vary by community, we will tell you what applies to the specific cart you are looking at, and you should confirm current requirements with the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and with your own HOA or municipality before you drive on a public road.

Where will it live and charge

A cart that lives outdoors in Florida sun needs a cover and will still age faster than one under a roof. More importantly, you need a suitable outlet where you park it, because a cart you cannot conveniently plug in becomes a cart with a chronically low battery, and that shortens pack life on any chemistry.

Who is getting in and out of it

If an older family member will use it daily, step-in height matters more than almost anything else on the spec sheet. A lifted cart looks better and rides better off pavement, and it is also harder to climb into. Have the person who will actually use it sit in both before you decide.
